The sun was shining bright on Thursday evening as the San Jose State Men’s Soccer team was able to defeat CSU Bakersfield in the first home game of the regular season, 2-0.

The Spartans got the lead five minutes into the game off of a set piece by freshman midfielder Angel Iniguez, in which senior defender Kasper Poulsgaard finished the play pushing it across the line.

SJSU senior goalkeeper David Sweeny was able to shut out CSUB. He was able to block all three shots that came his way.

“If you can start the season without conceding any goals, you know you are in a good place,” said SJSU head coach Simon Tobin in a Twitter interview.

The midfield was controlled by the Spartans as they were able to outshoot the Roadrunners, 16-7 during the match.

In the second half, SJSU junior defender Joel Garcia was able to find the back of the net off of a rebound from CSUB junior goalkeeper Filippo Dadone.

Although SJSU was able to secure the win, the team will be without one of its players in the next match.

Graduate midfielder Finley Wood was slapped with two yellow cards, once at the 76-minute mark of the match and at 86 minutes. The second resulted in Wood being sent off for the remainder of the game. He will miss the Spartans next game due to the general rule of soccer where you miss the next match if you get a red card.

“It’s going to be a tough, hot weekend, but we can take a little bit of excitement and confidence from tonight’s game to help us,” Tobin said.

The Spartans next game is on the road Sunday, Aug. 28 at 4:00 pm at Sacramento State.
