SJSU softball swept by Boise State

The San Jose State women’s softball team (20-22, 6-11 MW) played Boise State ( 30-10, 9-5 MW) on the road this weekend.

The Spartans had their first game against the Broncos Friday afternoon but lost 8-0. Freshman outfielder Jules Ronquillo was the only player to record a hit, an infield single in the fourth inning.

This was SJSU’s only chance during Friday’s game as the bases were loaded with two outs but still the Spartans couldn’t bounce back and take possession.

The Spartans came out with more momentum Saturday ready to clutch a win for SJSU.

Senior third baseman Alyssa Graham secured a two-run home run during the first inning, giving  SJSU  the lead 2-0.

Sophomore infielder Ashley Rico followed after Graham with a home run toward center field during the fourth inning, 3-0.

This momentum would be short lived as the Broncos responded back with two runs during the bottom of the fourth. They continued to trail the Spartans until the sixth when the Broncos took the lead with another two runs, 4-3.

SJSU could not respond back and ended the game 4-3, the Broncos won the second game of the three-game series.

Sunday’s game was hopefully a redemption for the Spartans but that hope was short lived by the third inning.

The Broncos were in the lead 3-1 going into the third inning, when they added another three runs to their score, 6-1. Spectators would assume this would be the most impactful inning during the game but Boise State was not done.

SJSU could not respond during the fourth. The Broncos took advantage and added four more runs during the bottom of the fourth, ultimately taking the lead and literally running with it 10-1.

The Spartans had one more chance during the top of the fifth but weren’t able to get any hits. The game ended with the mercy rule 10-1, Broncos won.

SJSU’s only hit during Sunday’s game was from junior infielder Jilian Figueroa during the second inning.

The Spartans next game is this Wednesday against the University of California in Berkeley, Calif. at 3 p.m.
