The San Jose Women’s tennis team (5-12, 1-6 MW) was outclassed by University of New Mexico (11-8, 2-5 MW) losing 4-2. This was the Spartan’s first matchup of a four-game roadtrip to close out the regular season.

Despite a hard fought attempt to slow down the lobos, the inexhaustible ferocity New Mexico came with was too much for SJSU to handle.

The day began with doubles action with both squads looking to make a statement early on. The Lobos took the first game 6-1 in dominant fashion yet the Spartans did not buckle. They responded with a 6-3 win to take game two.

It came down to a third and final game that went the distance, pushing both pairs to their limits. Ultimately Seniors Polly Chen and Myu Kageyama clutched up for New Mexico, securing a 5-4 victory in game three of doubles action.

The contest now moved to singles play where the Spartans were determined to bounce back after falling behind early. SJSU did just that, winning the first two singles matches, putting New Mexico against the ropes.

Despite the hot start from the side dawning blue and gold, the Lobos remained composed and embraced their gritty attitude.

New Mexico went on to win the next four singles matches to close out the game and secure the victory.

The Spartans have now lost six of their last seven games all of which have come against conference opponents. SJSU will continue to be tested in this area as their remaining games are against conference opponents.

The Spartans will look to bounce back against Air Force on Saturday. Opening serve is set for 1:30 p.m. in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
