With a five-match losing streak, it was a wonder if San Jose State women’s tennis’ play was enough fuel to win the match against UC San Diego.
Starting off with the doubles, the Spartans were off to a tough start. UCSD took the win, 2-1.
With the last five matches resulting in losses, the outcome of the match was the team’s focus.
“We actually have a few lost matches in a row. It was really important for us to win today’s match,” said junior Oleksandra Andrieieva.
UCSD showed their strength in the doubles but that did not hold up as the singles were dominated by the Spartans.
The first match to end was Irena Muradyan vs Rachel Wagner, Muradyan won with the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-1.
“We were in a five match losing streak, our backs against the wall. With the double start, it was tough. Our strength right now is in our singles and that showed in the results that you saw,” said head coach Chad Skorupka.
The change in score from the last five matches was enough confidence to keep going.
SJSU’s women’s tennis will head toward the Mountain West match against Colorado and Wyoming.
Coach Skorupka shared a video on Twitter that between the match with UCSD and the upcoming MW games, there is still time to practice doubles.
“I think the team was in good shape today. We were dominating the game. The beginning wasn’t that good for the team, because we lost the doubles point. But then we got a great start and we finished very fast,” said sophomore Irena Muradyan.
The game ended with junior Rozalina Youseva finishing her two sets with a score of 6-1.
With the third court wrapping up the game, the Spartans could sigh in relief as they broke their losing streak. Now, they head off to Fresno to start their MW matches.
