The Spartans gymnastics team went head-to-head with an energetic Washington University Huskies team and fell short to a tune of 196.900 to 195.400.
Jada Mazury earned first-place honors with a score of 9.925 on the bars event and earned first-place honors on the floor competition. Mazury notched a score of 39.930 overall, which put her in first place.
Jada Mazury and Carli Orcutt executed a one-two punch for the Spartans coming the event’s second half.
The score was nearly tied into the second half with 146.5 for the Spartans to 146.25 for the Huskies.
The Spartans did not play favorites in a dominant season despite a performance against Air Force last Friday in which they swept event titles.
The Huskies’ Amara Cunningham notched the first place on the beams.
The Huskies finished their first heat with a dominant performance by Kennedi Davis and a sketchy landing by the Spartans put them in an early hole.
The Spartans’ Alexa Solomon committed a crucial error on the bars by falling flat face-side onto the mat, but the Spartans quickly made up for the mistake with a plethora of solid rounds to end the first event.
Just when Washington seemed to be in cruise control, they made a significant error when Morgan Bowles fell flat after slipping off the bars.
The Huskies’ Geneva Thompson finished strong, with a solid performance on the balancing beam.
San Jose State advances to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships March 19 in Davis.
