The San Jose State women’s beach volleyball team fought to the very end against the Saint Mary’s Gaels, losing 3-2 Tuesday in Moraga, CA.

The match started red hot with the first three matches going into three sets.

Junior Siena Brewster and sophomore Abby Alvarez was the first Spartan duo that took the sand, going 22-20, 21-7 and 15-9 against the tough Gael duo of Jasmin Suarez and Jennifer Laird, respectively.

The Spartan duos of Jaida Ward and Amethyst Harper and Haylee Nelson and Mia Schafer took both of their matches to three sets, ultimately coming up shy 15-7 and 15-11 respectively in the third match.

Just as things seemed lost, the freshmen duo of Madeline Boerstra and Chloe Culver put SJSU on the board by defeating Aeriel Sundt and Trinity Durfee in two sets, 21-16 and 21-15.

Picking up right where they left off, fellow Spartans Cheyenne Rice and Sarah Smevog made sure to finish their match in only two sets as well, knocking off Laura Studebaker and Allie Cataldo 21-9 and 21-13.

After a hard fought match, the Spartans came up just short, putting them at a record of 2-3 on the year.

The Spartans will look to bounce back from the loss Saturday as they head to UC Davis in a dual meet against Cal at 11 a.m. and UC Davis at 3 p.m.
