San Jose State lost to Air Force, 58-54, in a game that came down to the final seconds.
Air Force was in control at the start of the game, outscoring the Spartans 9-1 in the first eight minutes.
Struggling to find their offense, the Spartans fed the ball to Ibrahima Diallo in the paint and he began to narrow the margin.
Diallo used his big frame to shoulder his way to the basket and force double teams. He was the first scorer in double digits with 10 points on 71% shooting and had 13 rebounds to go along with it. Diallo opened the floor for his teammates by drawing an extra defender and freshman guard Myron Amey Jr. immediately capitalized.
Amey was the game’s leading scorer off the bench with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists. Amey dove to the basket like he was shot out of a cannon, drawing contact and making sure his presence was felt.
The Spartans outrebounded the Falcons 22-10 in the first half, and tied the game at 26 by halftime.
Both teams struggled to score coming out of the half and it turned into a scrappy affair with no real momentum swings. After a four and a half minute scoring drought, Amey once again stepped up and got a much needed bucket to keep the Spartans in striking distance.
Amey continued to get to the free throw line, finishing the game 7-8 from the stripe. He hit a big three-pointer in the final minutes and the Falcons had no answer for him.
Despite Amey’s play, the Falcons were able to come out with the win. Falcons’ guard AJ Walker showed out on senior night, scoring 15 points with a variation of creative moves.
Omari Moore added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Spartans. Moore hit a clutch three with 1:36 left on the clock as San Jose State tried to claw its way back into it.
The Spartans play Utah State University on Friday at 8 p.m.
