Women’s softball rallies to win majority of games at Nor Cal Kickoff

San Jose State got off to a rough start at the Nor Cal Kickoff, losing its first game but rallying to win its next three.

SJSU lost 3-0 to the University of Montana Grizzlies in the opener.

The Spartans missed their chance to score during the second inning. They had the bases loaded with Trenity Edwards, Jocylyn Vidal and Jessica Giacoma.  Unfortunately for SJSU the Grizzlies’ pitcher then threw three strikeouts in a row to end the inning.

In the fourth inning, SJSU catcher Trenity Edwards made an error, allowing the Grizzlies to score a second time.

In the seventh inning, the Grizzlies scored again, putting the final nail in the coffin for that game.

The Spartans did better against Sac State squeaking by with a win, 2-1.

At the top of the fourth inning, Karizma Bergensen slammed a home run into right center field, allowing her and Jocelyn Vidal to score.

SJSU dominated against Santa Clara University, winning 9-0 by the sixth inning.

By the top of the sixth inning, the Spartans already had four runs on the scoreboard.  Then Jocelyn Vidal hit a homer into center field.  SJSU scored four more times, with Aneesa Almaguer, Jessica Giacoma, Lilly Meek and Jules Ronquillo all speeding past home plate.

When SJSU played Sac State for the second time, the Spartans again beat it narrowly 6-5.

The two teams went back and forth, with Trenity Edwards for SJSU scoring at the top of the first inning only for Sac State to hit a home run at the bottom of the first.

SJSU scored at the top of the third with Jules Ronquillo rounding past home.  Sac State battled back with three runs in the fourth inning, then SJSU scored three runs in the fifth.  SJSU scored twice in the fifth.  Sac tried to push back again with one run in the sixth inning but ran out of time.

The Spartans closed out the weekend with a narrow loss to Saint Mary’s College 4-3 going all nine innings.

Trenity Edwards, Ashley Rico, and Jocelyn Vidal claimed runs for SJSU, keeping the score tied 3-3 until the ninth inning.  Unfortunately, Saint Mary’s College’s player Claudie Kirchner hit a single allowing Alyssa Vessel to score, ending the game.

The women’s softball team’s next games are from Feb. 17 to Feb. 20 at Stanford for the Stanford Invitational.
