Saturday blues at CEFCU: SJSU dominated by Utah State

The Spartans jumped out to an early lead in the first half but were shutout in the second half.

San Jose State (5-6, 3-4 MW) hosted the Utah State Aggies (8-2, 5-1 MW) Saturday night for a conference battle. The Aggies started off slow but eventually blew out the Spartans 48-17.

An early mistake by graduate quarterback Logan Bonner turns into points for the Spartans. Bonner was intercepted by sophomore cornerback Kenyon Reed for a 58 yard pick six touchdown. Spartans go up 7-0.

Junior defensive end Viliami Fehoko forced a turnover late in the first quarter with a strip sack on Bonner. Shortly after the turnover, senior running back Tyler Nevens ran for his seventh touchdown of the season to put the score at 14-0.

The Aggies responded quickly as they went 70 yards in five plays for a touchdown to make the score 14-7.

Shortly after, Utah State senior wide receiver Savon Scarver found his way in the endzone after taking a flip pass from Bonner for two yards. Midway through the second quarter Utah State takes the lead with a rushing touchdown from sophomore running back Eleyon Noa.

Bonner finished the game 20-33, 263 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. Speedy senior wide receiver Deven Thompkins had another 100 yard game with 5 receptions and 127 yards receiving. The Aggies picked up their 5th straight win and they moved to 5-0 on the road this season.

In the second half SJSU was held scoreless as Utah State’s defense dominated. Graduate quarterback Nick Starkel started the game but junior quarterback Nick Nash played the majority of the second half and both were unable to make a difference through the air. The Spartans offense was unable to gain rhythm against the Aggies defense throughout the night.

The Spartans look to correct their mistakes from this game to make sure they have a better game vs Fresno State. SJSU heads into a bye week and then the big rivalry game against Fresno State on Thanksgiving day. The Spartans can gain bowl eligibility with one more win. Tune in.
