San Jose State football (5-5, 3-3 MW) host the dynamic Utah State Aggies (7-2, 4-1 MW) tonight.
The Spartans are still recovering from a heartbreaking three-point loss to the University of Nevada. The season is coming to an end and every game this point forward is critical.
It’s been a disappointing season for the Spartans this year after winning the Mountain West Championship last season, but SJSU still has a chance to make a bowl game.
Bowl games are important to a football program because the players get to take a holiday trip and they get a chance to play in a nationally televised game.
Graduate student tight end Derrick Deese Jr. and senior running back Tyler Nevens have been the most consistent offensive players for SJSU all season long.
Nevens leads the team in rushing with 725 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns this season while averaging 77.67 yards per game.
Deese Jr. leads the team in receiving with 41 receptions, 670 yards and 4 touchdowns. The offensive coach has to feed Deese Jr. and Nevens early and often in the game against the Aggies.
Senior linebacker Kyle Harmon is one of the best Linebackers in all of college football, as he is ranked second in the NCAA in total tackles with 104.
Utah State comes into the game with the No. 3 ranked offense in the MWC.
The Aggies are averaging 475 yards per game on offense. The offense is led by junior quarterback Logan Bonner and explosive senior wide receiver Deven Thompkins, leading the NCAA in all-purpose yards so far with 1,558.
This game will be a shootout down to the last minute. Both offenses can be methodical and score quickly.
If the Spartans can secure the victory over the Aggies it would not only make them bowl eligible, but it has been 29 years since SJSU has had back-to-back winning seasons and a win can bring them one step closer to securing that.
The game starts at 7:30 tonight and CEFCU Stadium will be rocking. The game will be broadcast on the FS1 network. Tune in.
