Men’s soccer preview: No. 4 seed Spartans take on No. 5 seed Utah Valley in WAC Tournament Quarterfinals

The San Jose State Men’s soccer team (9-6-3, 7-2-2 WAC) will take on the Utah Valley Wolverines (9-5-2, 6-4-0 WAC) in the Western Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday in Phoenix. 

The Spartans had a terrific season and earned a spot in the tournament for the second year in a row. Last season they fell to Air force in the shootout 4-3 in the quarterfinals.

SJSU averaged 1.56 goals per game this season while allowing 1.39 goals against. 

Senior midfielder Willy Miranda has led the way with six goals and six assists for 15 points in 16 games played. . He will be  the centerpiece for the Spartans heading into the postseason

Senior forward Rudi Castro who only played 10 games, has 14 points on the season with five goals and four assists. 

Senior midfielder Max Allen with 18 games under his belt, has three goals and seven assists for 13 points. 

Junior goalkeeper David Sweeney saw most of the minutes for SJSU and was stellar with a 1.37 goals against average and 0.761 save percentage in 12 games started.

As for the other side, the Wolverines only managed to play in seven games last season going 3-4 and 2-4 in the WAC. 

However they turned it around with a very high caliber offense.

They averaged 1.88 goals per game while only averaging one goal against per game.

Redshirt junior midfielder Jojea Kwizera poses a threat to SJSU with his four goals and nine assists for 17 point statline in 16 games played. 

Sophomore forward Aaron Nixon has cashed in seven goals and two assists for 16 points in 16 games played.

Freshman Diego Castillo  also almost averages a point a game with four goals and seven assists for 15 points in 16 games. 

The Spartans will have an exciting slate with a trip to the semifinals on the line. 

The match begins at 3:30 p.m. PST and will be televised on ESPN+ and the WAC Digital Network.
