Déjà vu: Nevada kicker takes down SJSU, again

By Caleb Ramos — Managing Editor

Some things never change. Nevada kicker Brandon Talton personified this Saturday night.

San Jose State (5-5, 3-3 MW) loss 27-24 to Nevada (7-2, 4-1 MW) after Talton split the uprights with a 45-yard field goal into the wind and the open side of the field at Mackay Stadium – the same direction he kicked a 40-yard game winner at the buzzer in 2019 that led to a 41-38 win.

Although this game ended on a field goal, kickers struggled to put up points all night.

The first half on a cold evening was filled with turnovers and missed field goals. Senior running back Tyler Nevens had his fumbled taken to the house for the first touchdown of the game.

Graduate student quarterback Nick Starkel returned under center for SJSU and tied the game at seven with a five-yard touchdown pass to Nevens.

The teams then traded interceptions three times. Then the teams traded missed field goals to end the half.

Both teams came out the locker rooms and mopped up the sloppiness in the second half.

The Wolf Pack came out aggressive. They picked off Starkel for a touchdown and put up another field goal to increase their lead to 17-7.

Starkel and the Spartans responded with a 48-yard touchdown pass to the freshman wide reciever Malikhi Miller.

Both teams once again put together drives that resulted in touchdowns. Nevada had possession with less than 30 seconds to play in the fourth quarter.

The Wolf Pack converted on a seemingly impossible 4th & 9. This incredible completion set up Nevada’s Talton for the game winning field goal.

SJSU hosts Utah State this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and can be viewed on FS1.
