It is bowl or bust time for the San Jose State football team.
SJSU (5-4, 3-2 MW) goes on the road to face a tough Nevada (6-2, 3-1 MW) squad that is undefeated at home this season.
One question that has been following the Spartans for the past month is when is graduate quarterback Nick Starkel going to come back?
Junior quarterback Nick Nash has posted a 3-2 record since he took over the offense. Whoever is under center for the Spartans on Saturday has to deal with a Wolf Pack defense that ranks fifth in the Mountain West in yards allowed per game.
The Spartan’s defense has a tough task ahead of it this weekend. Junior quarterback Carson Strong is having a great season for the Wolf Pack. He is first in the MW in completions, touchdowns, average and efficiency. He is second in passing yards only trailing Fresno State’s Jack Haener by five yards.
Strong is expected to enter the NFL draft at the end of the year and is playing like a first round pick. The SJSU defense must keep Strong in check, or else it is going to be a long night.
The Spartans got the run game going last week posting 248 rushing yards against Wyoming. 111 of those yards came from Nash. Junior running back Kairee Robinson rushed for 54 yards and a touchdown. Look for the offense to continue to work the run game on Saturday.
Graduate punter Will Hart continues to shine for SJSU special teams. Last week, Hart had six punts for 277 yards. The University of Michigan transfer ranks third in the MW in punting yards and average. Hart has been the unsung hero this year for the Spartans.
The game takes place on Saturday in Nevada at 7 p.m. on FS2.
