San Jose State’s women’s volleyball (9-4) defeated Boise State University (12-2) 3-2 marking the Spartans fifth consecutive win on the season.
During the first set, the Spartans and Broncos traded points continuously without any of the teams having a clear lead on each other.
Outside hitter junior Alyssa Sugai and setter sophomore Mia Schafer were the standouts for SJSU during the first set as they both managed to score consistently for the team with the Spartans winning the first set 28-26.
With SJSU winning the first set, it seemed as though the team would be bringing their “A” game onto the second set but that isn’t what happened as Boise State managed to make a good comeback on the Spartans.
Within the first few minutes of the game, both teams were trading points with each other until Broncos found their footing and took a good lead at 15-7 on SJSU.
Spartans fought back as hard as they could but unfortunately for them Boise still took the second set 25-15.
As both teams headed to the third set, the Broncos brought their momentum from the second set onto the third as they completely dominated this round leaving the Spartans 7-25.
SJSU had one more chance against Boise in the fourth set to see if they could go into the fifth quarter or not.
With an amazing turnover, the Spartans managed to take the win in the fourth set thanks to teamwork with players like Schafer and Sugai, along with other players like outside hitter senior Haylee Nelson and middle blocker graduate Ryann Thomison ending the winning the third set 25-21.
As both teams played in the fifth set, it seemed as though it was a repeat of the first set as both teams continuously traded t points.
Nelson scored a go-ahead kill for SJSU while junior outside hitter Amethyst Harper ended the match on an ace, securing a 15-13 Spartan victory.
The Spartans’ next game will be played in Logan, Utah against Utah State University on Saturday, October 2 at 1 p.m.
