The San Jose State men’s soccer team (2-2-1, 0-0-0 WAC) lost on the road Monday to Saint Mary’s College (4-2-2, 0-0-0).
After a fantastic start to the game, with just six minutes into the game, a goal by junior defender Kasper Poulsgard put SJSU up 1-0.
Even though the Spartans started with all the momentum, the Gaels quickly responded in the first half with a goal of their own by freshman midfielder Bourdanne Ngongfor to make the game tied at 1 with 10 minutes left to go in the half.
The Gaels then took the lead in the 2nd half with about 57 minutes on the clock with a goal by freshman forward Riley Lynch, to give him his second goal of the season.
Spartans’ senior midfielder Max Allen scores his 2nd goal of the season in the 78th minute to make the game tied 2-2.
The game quickly takes a turn for the worse for SJSU as senior midfielder Philippe Van der Lof from Saint Mary’s comes down the field and scores a big-time clutch goal to make the game 3-2 with about 4 minutes left on the clock. This is also Van der Lof’s second goal of the year.
Saint Mary’s freshman forward Jack Vestberg finally put the game out of reach by scoring his 3rd goal of the season to put the score at 4-2. Vestburg miraculously scored his goal with 3 seconds left to go in the game.
SJSU played with a lot of passion and energy at the start of the game but in the end, the Gaels were just too much as they wore down the Spartans in the 2nd half to put the game out of reach. Jack Vestburg has been a game changer for SMC this season so far and he played really well again today.
SJSU looks to get back on track in the win column when they face off against UC San Diego at Spartan Soccer Complex on Thursday at 5:00pm. on the WCC Network.
