San Jose State men’s soccer (2-1) finished off a 5-2 win against the UC Davis Aggies (0-4) this afternoon at the Spartan soccer complex.

Senior midfielders Max Allen and Finlay Wood both finished with a goal and assist.

The Aggies kept the pressure up in the first few stages of the game but the Spartans quickly scored an early breakaway goal by sophomore forward Ryota Nakashima, assisted by Wood.

UC Davis responded quickly with two great opportunities but junior goalkeeper David Sweeney stood tall keeping the one-goal lead for SJSU.

The Aggies finally got on the board ten minutes into the first half with a goal by senior midfielder Andy Velasquez and an assist by senior forward Robert Mejia to tie it up.

SJSU would regain the lead to 2-1 after a nifty goal from senior midfielder Willy Miranda which was assisted by Allen

The Spartans kept the ball at the other end giving themselves many chances to score.

Around the 42 minute mark, an aggressive penalty from the Aggies granted the Spartans a penalty kick that was belted in by Wood increasing the Spartans’ lead 3-1.

The second half saw great chances from both sides within the first 10 minutes. Both goalies on each end continued to stand tall for their respected teams.

The half would remain at 3-1 until a corner kick by the Aggies resulted in a precision-headed goal by redshirt freshman defender Tim Weidinger, dwindling SJSU’s lead by one.

The Spartans however, bought some insurance from two goals by senior defender Jamal Adam and Allen finishing off the Aggies 5-2.

“We just had to relax and keep it slow. It was important for us to keep being aggressive until the last whistle,” said senior defender Omar Lemus who had an assist on the day.

The Spartans have a tough weekend ahead against Stanford (1-1) on Saturday, September 11 and Saint Mary’s (2-1) Monday, September 13.

“We will prepare how we do every week,” said Allen. “The objective is always the same no matter who we play..it is to win.”
