San Jose State women’s soccer (0-2-0) was defeated in its home opener 2-0 by University of San Francisco (1-0-1)
The Spartans looked to bounce back after a 3-0 loss to Santa Clara University last Thursday, but could not keep up with the early aggression on offense from the Dons.
USF had some chances to take the early lead, however, both opportunities were denied by SJSU freshman goalkeeper Shayla Sugai.
“I was watching film on them earlier and they were a very big aggressive team”, said Sugai. “As a defense we were prepared in the beginning for those moments.”
USF’s lightning-quick attack paid off as they eventually found the back of the net near the eleventh minute of the game courtesy of forward Marissa Vasquez.
SJSU did not have the same success on the offensive side of the ball as they struggled to find good opportunities to score.
The Spartans finished the first half with only two shot attempts and finished the game with six total.
“We’re a new team and haven’t really played with each other a lot”, said sophomore midfielder Jaiden McClellan. “Getting to know each other more, how we like to each play, I think that just comes with time.”
At the 39th minute, the Dons were able to take advantage of a misplay and doubled their lead going into halftime.
The Spartans came out with improved energy on offense in the second half creating some chances to score.
Ultimately it became a back and forth battle to control the ball that lasted until the end of the game.
“We’re not focusing on the results, we’re focusing on what we can learn from each game.” said Spartan head coach Lauren Hanson.”Tonight we learned that we have to start right.”
The Spartans will continue their home stint as they are set to host UC Santa Barbara this Sunday at 12:00 pm.
