Men’s soccer preview: SJSU at CSU Bakersfield

By Alejandra Vaca — Reporter

San Jose State men’s soccer (0-0-0) will travel to Southern California tonight to play against Cal State Bakersfield (0-0-0) at their Main Soccer Field.

The last time these two teams played each other was during the WAC tournament in 2019, in which the Spartans were eliminated by the Roadrunners in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss.

Senior goalkeeper David Sweeney finished the match with four saves, but that was not enough for the Spartans as they fell short to the Roadrunners 1-0.

Prior to their playoff match-up, SJSU secured its first victory of the 2019 season against CSUB 3-2 in its regular season, pushing their regular-season win streak against the Roadrunners to three games.

In that game, returning midfielder seniors Nicolas Brenes and Danny Sanchez scored goals for the Spartans, sending them home with a victory.

Tonight, Brenes and Sanchez, as well as returning midfielder seniors Willy Miranda, Max Allen, Carlos Gomez-Zavala and forward senior Rudy Castro will have another shot against CSUB.

The Spartans participated in two exhibition games this month, in which they secured a 2-1 victory against the University of San Francisco and walked away with a 2-2 draw against the Cal Berkeley Bears

The Roadrunners finished with a 2-1 record in their respective exhibition games, with their latest contest ending in a 4-1 victory against  Loyola Marymount.

Both teams will be looking to kick off their 2021 with a victory in the win column.

The ball will start rolling at 7:00 p.m. and can also be streamed through ESPN+.
