The Spartans made a three-run comeback in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game but fell 8-7 against the Cardinal.
San Jose State baseball (6-18, 2-8 MW) battled Stanford University (27-10, 12-6 Pac-12) in nine innings on Tuesday evening.
The game started off scoreless for both teams.
Until the top of the second inning as sophomore catcher Taylor Justus singled to center driving in junior right fielder James Shimashita for the first run of the game.
Then Cardinal sophomore catcher Kody Huff retaliated with an RBI single up the middle for freshman third baseman Drew Bowser to tie the game up 1-1.
Shimashita smacked a home run down the right field line to give SJSU a 2-1 advantage in the top of the fourth inning.
The Spartans’ home run inspired the Cardinal offense to get their own bats swinging with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning Justus scored from an RBI groundout by senior left fielder Reece Hernandez and freshman designated hitter Charles McAdoo hit an RBI single to shorten the deficit to 6-4.
After Stanford added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning, SJSU sophomore third baseman Dalton Bowling scored on junior first baseman Ruben Ibarra’s RBI fly out to right field line to cut the Cardinal lead to just one.
McAdoo then tied the ballgame at seven with a two-run home run to left center field.
Both teams left runners on base in the eighth inning.
The Cardinal’s Huff hit a walk-off home run to finalize the game.
The Spartans will hit the road to Colorado for a four game series against Air Force starting Friday at 10:00 a.m. on the Mountain West Network.
