Spartans split doubleheader versus Aggies

San Jose State baseball (5-13) won the first game 4-3 of the three-game series against UC Davis (11-19) but later lost 12-2 in the second game.

Game one

The first pitch of the series was thrown at 12 p.m. in Davis, Calif.

The Spartans started off strong with junior first baseman Ruben Ibarra’s RBI single scoring senior designated hitter Reece Hernandez to give them the 1-0 lead in the first inning.

SJSU’s defense retreated back to the dugout with UCD’s offense stranded on all bases in the bottom of the first.

Ibarra continued the momentum from the first inning to the third with a two-run home run making this his sixth homer in the last seven games.

Top of the fourth, freshman second baseman Jackson Forbes hit an RBI down the middle for senior catcher Andrew Jurado to touch home plate increasing the Spartan lead to 4-0.

It wasn’t until the bottom of the fifth where the Aggies started with their bats.

UCD’s sophomore third baseman Jalen Smith hit an RBI double to left center which scored freshman second baseman Nick Iverson for its run of the game. Smith then scored on a throwing error from the Spartans cutting the lead to 4-3.

It was silent for both teams up until the bottom of the ninth with the Aggies’ freshman right fielder Jake Brandel hit an RBI to score pinch runner junior J.D. Mico bringing Davis one run closer. .

Yet SJSU held on to the slim lead and was victorious 4-3 in the first game of the day.

Game two

The Spartans couldn’t keep their strength in offense as they fell 12-2 to the Aggies at the 3 o’clock game. .

Top of the second and runners in scoring position, SJSU sophomore third baseman Dalton Bowling RBI ground out to shortstop led freshman right fielder Kai Saterstrom to score, 1-0.

The Aggies retaliated in the bottom of the second to tie up the game.

The bottom of the third was where UCD started up its bats and drove in six runs to give it a 7-1 advantage.

Saterstrom came up with an RBI to score Ibarra in the bottom of the fifth.

The Aggies continued their batting energy with six runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to finalize their 12-2 win.

The Spartans are looking for redemption in the final game of the series against the Aggies on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins in Davis, Calif.
