In the 99th minute, the Spartans left their winning mark in Utah.
San Jose State (3-1-2, 1-2-0) men’s soccer sealed its 3-2 win against Utah Valley in overtime Wednesday night.
Junior midfielder Finlay Wood scored the winner on the counter attack to and finish off SJSU’s undefeated road schedule.
With an assist from senior forward Rudi Castro and senior midfielder Max Allen, the Spartans charged through the Wolverines with quick dribbling and control. Their move ended with Wood’s shot from just inside the box, past the outstretched hand of UVU keeper Joseph Wheelwright and into the corner of the net.
SJSU had control of the ball from the start but not enough to keep Utah Valley off the scoreboard.
In the 16th minute Castro assisted senior midfielder Nicolas Brenes for the first goal of the game. Castro then assisted senior midfielder Willy Miranda for the second goal in the 68th minute.
Down two goals, Utah Valley upped the pressure in its attempt to fight back into the game. The Spartans lost their control towards the end when the Wolverines’ aggression scored them two goals late, one coming from a penalty kick.
But Utah Valley’s comeback hopes were ended by Wood’s kick to the net in the ninth minute of overtime.
Sophomore goalkeeper David Sweeney had three saves. SJSU had 13 shots, four corner kicks and a whopping 17 fouls compared to the Wolverines’ 12.
The Spartans will look to take their winning spirits back home when they match up against Incarnate Word at the Spartan Soccer Complex on Saturday at 12 p.m.
