Spartans’ offense devoured by Pacific Tigers pitching

By Benny Garcia — Reporter

San Jose State softball (3-9) was defeated by the University of the Pacific (6-7) on Wednesday night 5-1.

The loss pushes SJSU to a four-game losing streak.

And the woes continue for Spartans senior pitcher Caroline Bowman, as she allowed 4 earned runs over 2.2 innings pitched.

Bowman let up three extra-base hits with two doubles and a triple.

She was hit with the loss moving her record to 0-5 on the season.

While Bowman couldn’t get through three innings of work, junior Jenessa Ullegue held off the Tigers offense and finished the rest of the game.

Ullegue found herself in trouble throughout the game, but managed to work her way out of it without allowing a run in 4.1 innings pitched.

In the top of the fifth inning, senior Makayla Englestad made a diving catch in left field that saved two runs from scoring to end the inning.

The bats, however, were no help as they went a combined 4-for-23 in the game with four strikeouts.

Tigers pitching kept the Spartans offense in check with the pitching of their two freshmen Avery Croxall and Amiyah Aponte.

The duo was lights out, only allowing SJSU to score their lone run in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out RBI double by sophomore shortstop Jocylyn Vidal which scored freshman second baseman Ashley Rico.

Croxall and Aponte pitched a combined seven innings tonight, which earned them their first wins of the season.

The Spartans look to snap their losing streak against Santa Clara University on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
