San Jose State Softball did not have a good weekend. The Spartans dropped both games of their doubleheader against Cal. State Fullerton by the scores of 15-1 and 6-0.
Throughout the weekend the Spartans struggled to hit and were not effective enough on the mound. The Fullerton and UCLA offenses were put on display against SJSU. Both teams shut down the SJSU offense and responded with power and timely hitting against the Spartans.
The first game against Fullerton only lasted five innings because of the NCAA’s eight-run rule. The rule states that if a team is ahead by eight or more runs after the fifth inning then the game will be stopped. Senior Caroline Bowman started once again but only lasted two innings and giving up five earned runs.
Senior catcher Grace Garvey gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the second.
In the second game against Fullerton Junior pitcher, Jenessa Ullegue went the distance however was not as effective as the last complete game she pitched. Ullegue finished with six innings pitched, allowing six runs, four earned, and only struck out two.
On Sunday SJSU took on No. 4 ranked UCLA and lost 14-0 in five innings. Ullegue started for the Spartans and it was trouble from the start. Finishing with 3.2 innings pitched giving up seven earned runs before coming out of the game with one out in the fourth.
Bowman then came in and was only able to get one out in the inning while giving up seven earned runs. Ullegue was forced back into the game to get the final out of the fourth.
SJSU will look to move past this rough weekend with its first home game of the season against University of the Pacific this Wednesday at 4 p.m.
