San Jose State women’s water polo (1-2, 0-0 MPSF) got its first win of the season Sunday with a commanding 17-7 win over Santa Clara University (0-2, 0-0 GCF).
The two leading scorers of the game, junior utility Olga Descalzi Portell and senior driver Sierra Painter did not miss, completing every single one of their shot attempts.
The seasoned players led the Spartans in goal scoring with Portell going a perfect six for six in goals made while Painter went four for four.
SJSU stormed out to a 4-1 advantage in the first quarter and never surrendered the lead at that point.
The Spartans had a secure lead by halftime at 9-1, keeping their Bay Area rivals scoreless in the second quarter.
They continued their domination in the third quarter with six made field goals.
Leading 15-2 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Spartans finalized their victory off two more goals by freshman attacker Ryann Lucchesi and senior utility Riley Agerbeek putting the final score at 17-7.
The Spartans made a whopping 17 goals off 30 shots and went five for six on their power plays Sunday.
It was a great day for SJSU and it looks to continue this momentum as they travel to the Avery Aquatic Center to face the Stanford Cardinals Saturday at 1 p.m.
