Softball: Spartans look to turn season around against Gaels

By Annabelle Del Bosque — Reporter

San Jose State softball (0-3) will continue on the road for a three game series against Saint Mary’s College (5-3) Friday in Moraga, Calif.

The Spartans and Gaels are both looking for redemption after their losses.

Here’s who to look out for on the diamond.

Spartans’ senior right-handed pitcher Caroline Bowman will potentially start in the circle Friday.

Bowman allowed a total of 16 hits and eight runs in the first two games against Stanford over the weekend, but didn’t see action in the third game.

This might indicate SJSU’s head coach Tammy Lohmann is saving Bowman’s arm for the upcoming game.

Bowman and the Spartans’ whole staff have to be precise in the strike zone against Gaels’ senior shortstop Jayda Alaan, with a batting average of .308 on the season.

Alaan led the Gaels in the first game of their doubleheader against UC Davis with two hits and one run scored to help the team to a 4-0 victory Wednesday.

For the Spartans’ offense junior third baseman Alyssa Graham has shown an ability to get on base and hit for power, sporting a 1.381 on-base plus slugging (OPS) for the season.

Graham and the rest of the Spartans’ baserunners have to be careful with senior left-handed catcher Hannah Chew behind the plate.

Chew has 67 putouts this season, the most of the team.

The first pitch is Friday at 1 p.m.
