Men’s soccer preview: SJSU returning after long hiatus

By Dan Nguyen — Reporter

The San Jose State men’s soccer team will be hosting its first game of the 2020-21 season Saturday, Feb. 20 against Dixie State (0-1). This marks the Spartans’ first match since November 13, 2019. With the postponement of its first two regular season games against The University of The Incarnate Word and Air Force, the Spartans seek victory in their return with their familiar faces and new forces.

Returning and new players for SJSU

Senior midfielder Max Allen is one of SJSU’s most prolific returners, with 30 shots (14 goals) in 2019.

Freshman forward Mazi Wyatt will be playing his first game for SJSU since joining the Spartans’ roster.

With a whole year not being able to play a match, the Spartans first game back would be a start out on the right foot.

Dixie State is no pushover either.

Junior defender Matt Lockwood has a total of 21 shots (16 goals) which could be a match for SJSU.

Junior midfielder Raul Ruiz has played in 19 matches with five goals on 10 attempted shots tallying up three assists for his teams.

SJSU will need to adapt to Dixie State’s attacking talent.

Dixie State has played one game this season, a 4-0 loss against Air Force on Feb. 6.

Kick off will be at 1 p.m. (MT) Saturday at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George, Utah.
