San Jose State softball (0-1) lost 9-2 to Stanford (1-0) Saturday. It was a tough start to the season for the Spartans as they struggled to get going.
SJSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning by way of an RBI single by sophomore infielder Karizma Bergesen. That would be the only lead in the game for the Spartans as Stanford responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first.
Senior Caroline Bowman got the start for SJSU and finished with five innings pitched while giving up five earned runs. Although her control of the strike zone wasn’t an issue, Bowman struggled to create swings and misses. She gave up 12 hits while striking out four and only walked one.
Stanford scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 5-1. The Spartans finally got back on the board with a run in the top of the sixth via an RBI single by freshman Malia Luna.
In the bottom of the inning sophomore Jackie Rookaird came into pitch but struggled with her control. Rookaird gave up four earned runs while walking three batters and giving up three hits.
This was a tough first loss for a newer-looking SJSU softball team who will look to get their first victory in a doubleheader on the road against Stanford on Saturday at 1 p.m and 3 p.m.
