The San José State women’s tennis team is set to play Sacramento State (0-3) Monday, at 1 p.m.
SJSU (1-0) kicked off the season Feb. 12 with a 4-1 win against UC Irvine.
Freshmen Irena Muradyan and Jovana Babic exhibited professional skills to clench individual victories for themselves and strengthen the team scores.
Muradyan defeated Arianna Tilbury 6-2, 6-0 while Babic defeated Emily Fowler 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
Muradyan and graduate student Tamara Culibrk together won 6-1 for SJSU while Babic and Rozalina Youseva claimed doubles points to win 7-5.
The Spartans won three singles matches and ended two unfinished after clinching victory against the Anteaters.
Muradyan won the first singles point for SJSU with a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-0.
Youseva added to the team’s tally by beating her opponent with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Babic won the game in three sets, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
The Spartans are playing Sacramento State for the first time in over a year.
The last time the two teams met, the Spartans crushed the Hornets 6-1 in a victory at the Spartan Tennis Complex.
Sacramento State retains four players from last year’s squad. The Hornets are playing with seniors Ege Tomey, and Frana Ugarkovic, juniors Jayden Nielsen, and Megan Tagaloa, sophomores Paige Alter, Shauna Casey, Grace Dodd, Tsveti Yotova and freshmen Jin Yu.
They are winless this season, losing against Saint Mary’s (7-0), Fresno State (5-2) and BYU (7-0).
Bolstered by their last win, the Spartans will look to take advantage of a slumping Hornets team when they take the court Monday.
