San Jose State men’s basketball secured a win in Phoenix, Ariz. over Benedictine Mesa 80-64 at Ability 360 Sport and Fitness Center Monday night.
The Redhawks (0-4) led for a combined 2:59 the entire game, but at the 16:44 mark in the first half, the Spartans (2-6, 0-4 MW) took a 6-5 lead and never looked back.
Senior forward Ralph Agee had a career-high 18 points in the contest along with nine rebounds. Three other Spartans finished in double figures as well.
SJSU jumped out to a 14-5 run with 13:01 left in the first half.
Junior transfer Jalen Dalcourt was the catalyst of the first half for the Spartans, as he knocked down all four triples he attempted. Dalcourt went on to finish the game with 18 points.
SJSU took a 47-28 lead into halftime.
In the first six minutes of the second half, the Spartans continued their solid play and jumped out to a 13-5 run to extend their lead to 60-35.
About midway through the second half, the Redhawks ripped off a 20-8 run of their own, cutting the lead down to 70-60 with 4:02 remaining.
However, the Spartans locked down the Redhawks down the stretch, allowing only four points in the final four minutes of the contest.
Senior guard Richard Washington was another notable contributor, finishing with his second career double-double with 17 points and 10 boards.
Sophomore guard Omari Moore continued to impress as well with 11 points and nine boards.
The Spartans’ next game will be Friday versus the Fresno State Bulldogs at the Save Mart Center at 6 p.m.
