At least one member of San Jose State’s football program has tested positive for COVID-19, according to sources close to the team.
Eight players and coaches were listed unavailable for the Spartans in Thursday’s Arizona Bowl loss against Ball State. No detailed reasons were given for the absences but SJSU says not all are COVID-19 related.
Offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven, defensive coordinator Derrick Odum, first team all-Mountain West wide receiver Bailey Gaither, center Kyle Hoppe, guard Tyler Stevens, defensive lineman Cade Hall, second team all-Mountain West safety Tre Jenkins and returner Shamar Garrett were all announced as inactive before the game.
Before leaving for the Arizona Bowl last week the Spartans flew back home to spend Christmas with family.
Head coach Brent Brennan says he stands by his decision despite the loss.
“That was the best thing to do for our players, with what they have been through.”
