San Jose State men’s basketball player Seneca Knight is opting out of the remainder of the Spartans 2020-2021 season due to COVID-19 concerns, the team announced Monday.
“We fully understand and support Seneca’s decision,” head coach Jean Prioleau said in the announcement. “This has been a challenging year for everyone and the health and safety of our student-athletes is always our top concern.”
A third-team all-Mountain West selection last season, Knight led the team in scoring (17.1 per game) and rebounding (5.7 per game) in 2019-20.
The guard was third in Mountain West play with 20.1 points a game in 2019-2020. Against Colorado State the now junior scored 37 points, the second-highest single game total in the Mountain West last season.
Knight’s opt-out is a major loss for a basketball program that relocated to Phoenix earlier this month because of COVID-19 restrictions in the Bay Area.
The Spartans (1-4, 0-2 MW) began their conference season last week with two losses to reigning MW champion, and will start a two-game series with Boise State (6-1, 2-0 MW) on Thursday.
