San Jose State men’s and women’s basketball is relocating to Phoenix, Ariz. for the start of Mountain West play, the SJSU Athletics announced Thursday.
No sporting events have taken place in the South Bay since Santa Clara County’s changes to its mandatory COVID-19 directives went into effect on Nov. 30.
Since then the county has implemented a regional stay-at-home order lasting until Jan. 4, 2021 barring any extensions.
The men’s team will play one more game at Kaiser Permanente Arena in Santa Cruz against Santa Clara University, before traveling to Logan, Utah to begin conference play against Utah State.
The women’s team is on a 14-day pause of activities due to a positive COVID-19 test in the program, so they will return to action on Dec. 21 against the Aggies in Phoenix.
“As we begin Mountain West Conference competition, this temporary move will allow our student-athletes and staff to live in as controlled an environment as possible,” said SJSU athletic director Marie Tuite in the announcement.
“We will plan on returning to San José when the directives from our health officials allow our programs to practice and compete in Santa Clara County.”
