As San Jose State (3-0) continues its historic season, the team looks to rise to 4-0 with a victory over University of Nevada, Las Vegas (0-3) on Saturday in San Jose.
It might not be easy for the Spartans though, as starting QB Nick Starkel was injured early in the Spartans last contest against San Diego State and was replaced by backup QB Nick Nash.
Starkel said he gave Nash some words of encouragement to keep him motivated.
“I just said, ‘Hey, schemes are great on paper. You are not a great player on paper. You’re a great player when you have the ball in your hands and you’re just playing football.’ He took a little different approach to some of the plays than I would have, but that’s how he wins.”
Nash passed for 169 yards and two touchdowns and carried the ball for 53 yards and a score in the 28-17 victory
It’s unclear whether Starkel or Nash will start the game on Saturday.
The last time these two teams met last season it was a close game with UNLV ultimately coming out on top 38-35.
If the Spartans find a victory on Saturday, it would be the first time the team started a season 4-0 since 1955.
Head coach Brent Brennan said his team remains focused on its goal of securing a championship this season.
“If you want to win championships, you’ve got to beat the best people in your conference,” Brennan said. “It’s plain and simple.”
While the 3-0 start is impressive, Brennan said that all he’s focused on is the upcoming game against UNLV.
“I don’t think we can put anything in historical terms until we’ve actually done something,” Brennan said. “We’ve won three games. We’ve got five left … but this is all about the next one now. None of it matters if we don’t play well going forward.”
The game is Saturday and starts at 7:30 pm in San Jose at CEFCU Stadium.
