Opinion: SJSU football is new unexpected threat in MW

By Stevie Corio — Reporter

San Jose State football has not had much success since joining the Mountain West. SJSU has a 27-59 record since joining the conference in 2013. The team’s 3-0 record and recent victory against San Diego State is another step closer to changing the narrative about this program.

With only eight conference games this season due to COVID-19, SJSU is on the road to possibly having a winning season. It’s looking like SJSU may be stripping their reputation as the underdog.

Much of their recent success has come from the chemistry of the starting quarterback Nick Starkel and the receiving corps. This connection has completely turned around the Spartans’ this season.

This progression in the offense is exactly what the Spartans have been needing to turn the program around. Having this shift in the offense and support of the newly consistent defense is only going to lead to further success for the Spartans.

SJSU has also proven that they can adjust to a little change in plans When Starkel came out of last night’s game the second-string quarterback Nick Nash came in, held it down and helped follow through the Spartans’ victory against SDSU.

On Nov. 14 the Spartans will face UNLV at CEFCU Stadium. If the Spartans are able to get another win next week, the target on their backs will only grow larger. SJSU has yet to face fellow undefeated Nevada and perennial powerhouse Boise State this season, but right now it looks like SJSU won’t be underestimated by them any longer.

For the first time likely ever, the MW is sweating the Spartans.
