While state and local authorities continue to deliberate on the reopening of college football in California, San Jose State is moving practices to Humboldt State this week, the team announced today.
Other Mountain West football teams are beginning to ramp up practices as the conference’s football season is confirmed to start next month.
But SJSU is not allowed to hold full practices on campus due to Santa Clara County’s guidelines on outdoor athletic activities.
“We look forward to continued conversations with Santa Clara County health officials regarding our ‘Return to Football’ proposal.,” said SJSU AD Marie Tuite in the announcement.
“In the meantime, to prepare to compete at the FBS Division I level, it’s imperative that we move from conditioning and skill development practices to team activities. Moving our football program to Humboldt State enables our team to prepare, while our County continues the important work of reviewing and approving our protocols”
According to the announcement, the team will stay at HSU’s on campus housing. The school’s football facilities haven’t been in use since 2018, when they discontinued football amidst a budget crisis.
The team will be tested once a week before the Mountain West officially begins its three-times-a-week testing that will occur throughout the season.
The conference’s eight-game football season begins the week of Oct. 24, with the championship game scheduled for Dec. 19.
