Spartan golfers recognized by Mountain West

Even with sports on hold, San Jose State athletes are still being celebrated.

Sophomore golfer Natasha Andrea Oon was named the 2019-20 MW Women’s Golfer of the Year after she led the conference in stroke average at 71.64.

Golfstat, which hosts college golfing scores and stats, ranked Oon No. 27 in the nation. The recognition from the conference comes less than a week after she was named an honorable mention All-American honoree by the Women’s Golf Coaches’ Association.

This is just a few of many accolades she’s raked.

Her freshman year she was selected first team all Mountain West, named a WGCA All-American Scholar and won the Mountain West Freshman of the Year award for the 2018-19 season.

Although the season was stunted, Oon remarkably had three top-10 finishes.

Notably, Oon wasn’t the only one acknowledged for her feats. Sophomore Antonia Malate and freshman Kajsa Arwefjäll were selected to the second team all Mountain West. Malate recorded a 73.86 stroke average in 14 rounds played while Arwefjäll recorded a 74.43 stroke average in 14 rounds played.

“I am really happy for all three players,” head coach Dana Dormann told Spartan Athletics. “We really wish we could have finished the season. Natasha was getting herself ready to have another strong finish this spring. She works very hard and is a complete player.”

As the season was cut short, a week ago today the Spartans would have teed off in the Mountain West Championship in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
