San Jose State gymnastics fell to UC Davis on Friday night 194.925-192.575. It marked the lowest score for the Spartans this season.
“I am really disappointed,” said head coach Joanne Bowers. “The energy and the team wasn’t the same tonight.”
Prior to Friday night, the Spartans had been steadily improving with every meet this season.
SJSU had a few falls and mistakes on their routines that ended up playing a crucial role in the loss.
“It definitely throws off the rhythm of the team and the set,” said senior Taylor Chan. “For the younger ones this is just a way to learn and practice, but it sucks. There is nothing you can do about it.”
Chan’s 9.9-floor routine would earn her top spot for floor. She scored a 9.775 on vault and a 9.725 on bars, which led the Spartans.
“I can do these routines with my eyes closed,” Chan said. “We do so many numbers, that I just have to remind myself that I can do this.”
She is only one of two seniors on the Spartan squad and has been the most consistent gymnast.
Freshman Emma Milne was just short of the top routine for floor as she scored a 9.800.
Sophomore Tia Gin tallied a 38.425 on all-around, which came just under Chan’s Spartan-leading 38.625.
SJSU’s next meet will be at UC Davis as these programs will compete for the third time this season.
“Let’s get ready and really show them what we are made out of,” Bowers said. “It’s not going to be a punishment, but we have to get out minds right and get a little tougher.”
SJSU will compete with UC Davis again on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
