San Jose State gymnastics competed in its ninth consecutive NorCal Classic meet at UC Davis, where it finished in third place with 193.850 points.

It was UC Berkeley that won the event with 194.950 points.

Competing in her first collegiate meet as a Spartan, freshman all-around Emma Milne tied for fifth place on bars with a 9.800.

Her fellow teammate, freshman all-around Shyan Phillips also competed in bars for her first college level routine, scoring a 9.650.

Spartan senior Taylor Chan returned for her final year and accomplished a third-place finish on beam with a 9.800, just .075 points short of the Bear’s first place finisher.

Tying for fifth, freshman all-around Cameron Kelpris successfully competed in her first collegiate event on vault with a 9.800.

On floor, several Spartans scored above a 9.475. It was Kelpris and freshman all-around Jada Mazury who both tied for 10th at 9.725.

For Phillips and Chan, they both concluded the afternoon with fourth and fifth-place finishes for the all-around event.

It was the four freshmen who had a strong first opening meet, all competing in more than two events individually.

For each event, the team collectively scored above a 48.000. A good start for the 2020 season.

Up next, the team will travel up north to chilly Anchorage, Alaska for a Saturday afternoon meet.
