You can tell if a team is good by watching how they handle adversity. This team is good.
Ayzhiana Basallo and Raziya Potter combined for 45 points, as San Jose State women’s basketball (11-6, 5-1 MW) came back to defeat Colorado State (8-8, 2-3 MW) 58-53 on Saturday.
Miss Fourth Quarter
Spartans guard Ayzhiana Basallo scored 12 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter on Saturday.
Like most of her teammates she struggled in the first half, scoring five points on only 2-of-9 shooting, with one assistt.
But after halftime she came alive, scoring 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting, most of which came from her dribble-drive scampers to the basket.
The sophomore’s effort was her second-highest scoring output of the season, behind only her 33-point game against San Diego and her 29-point game at Santa Clara.
Raziya Potter and the Spartans’ Stone
Sophomore Raziya Potter scored a career-high 19 points Wednesday.
Her nine first-half points — and seven of the team’s 12 first-quarter points — kept the struggling Spartans within striking distance despite six turnovers of her own in that span.
Her and Basallo combined for 31 of the Spartans’ 36 second half points, as Potter also put in seven rebounds, and drained four of her six free-throw attempts in the half.
Finishing Strong
SJSU was struggling to get things going in the first half, shooting only 32 percent from the field with 12 turnovers. The normally sharp-shooting Spartans only drained two of their 10 attempts from long range, and were missing plenty of shots around the basket as well.
Despite that, they woke up when they needed to.
The Spartans outscored Colorado State 36-22 in the second half, on the backs of Basallo and Potter. The team had only five turnovers in the second half, and shot 44 percent from the field, most of the damage being done at the rim.
