Spartan swim fails to make a splash against No. 3 UC Berkeley

It was a tough day for San Jose State swim and dive as it lost by over 100 points in its head to head meet against UC Berkeley on Saturday.

Despite the traumatic 174-46 defeat in swimming events, the Spartans still managed to get competitive times. It is tough going up against ranked teams as Cal is currently sitting in the nation’s top-3.

One shining event gave SJSU its temporary spotlight  — the 300-yard butterfly relay. The trio of seniors Violani Auva’a, Antoinette Loya and freshman Rebecca Petoe not only won the event, but finished nearly 24 seconds ahead of the second place trio.

That victory alone got SJSU 11 points, nearly a quarter of its final score.

The domination in the relay event was huge for the team, but it was only the third event of the morning. The Spartans would not see another victory for the rest of the meet.

Petoe also managed to finish second in the 150-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:45:00.

The story was not much different for the Spartan divers. Usually SJSU is at a disadvantage with its two divers, but Cal matched them with only two as well.

Senior Natasha Sondeno finished second in the 1-meter, nearly eight  points better than the third place Cal finisher.

Other than that success, the Spartan diving duo only  gained 11 points.

The meet ended with  a final score of 199-57. The Spartans do not have too much of a holiday break, as their next competition will be on Jan. 2 against CSU Bakersfield..
