Following the Mountain West Conference Championships, the San Jose State men’s and women’s cross country teams both placed top-20 in the NCAA Division 1 West Regional Meet.
A total of 35 schools competed Friday, including schools from the Pac-12 and Mountain West.
Stanford had the best day, finishing first for the women’s with 39 points and second for the men’s with 78. Portland was able to beat Stanford by only 43 seconds.
The women of Sparta finished 13th overall with a total time of 1:45:47 and an average of 21:10. Sophomore Jenny Sandoval placed 10th out of 244. With a time 20:09.8. A huge accomplishment for Sandovalas she was able to beat her previous personal record from the conference championship.
Senior Savanna Perez and Sophomore Mikayla Akers were the only other Spartans to finish in the top 100.
For the men, SJSU placed 17th with a total time of 2:39:19 and an average of 31:51. Senior Jose Pina finished 27th of 191 runners with a time of 30:14.4.
Sophomore Luis Chavez and Senior Edgar Bonilla also made their names known in the top 100.
A few of the Spartan runners will be selected to compete in the NCAA Championships on Nov 23 at 7 a.m. in Terre Haute, Ind. These advancers have not been announced yet.
