San Jose State volleyball lost in three sets as they could not overcome the Mountain West leaders and No. 14 Colorado State.
The SJSU (7-13,2-7 MW) offense lacked fire as the team totaled for 28 kills and 26 assists. Senior Thaliana Grajeda and sophomore Haylee Nelson led the Spartan’s offense with 6 kills apiece.
Nelson also led the team with 10 digs and Grajeda also had a team-best of 3 block assists.
The Spartan defense was not enough to slow down the Rams’ (19-1. 9-0 MW) momentum on offense as the opposing team racked up a total of 49 kills.
The Rams’ offense was led by redshirt senior Kirstie Hillyer with 11 kills and senior Hougaard-Jensen with 12 kills.
The first set (25-16) belonged to the Rams as they took an early lead from the first serve. CSU hit .326 while SJSU had a hitting percentage of .132.
In the second set, the Spartans fired back a 3-0 lead early on with redshirt senior Fernada Vido hitting back-to-back aces to provide the offense with momentum. The offensive momentum was short -lived as the Rams went on a 13-2 run to win the set 25-18.
In the final set, the Spartans fought for an early lead. The Rams fought back to tie the set at 7-7, but SJSU rallied for 3 points to give them the lead.
CSU tied the set back up at 12-12 then hit the Spartans with 4 kills that ruined all chances at a victory for SJSU. The Rams finished the set at 25-19 and solidified the sweep over the Spartans.
The Spartans will look to finish out their road trip with a win against Wyoming Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
