San Jose State men’s soccer (2-7, 2-0 WAC) defeated the University of Missouri-Kansas Roos (1-6, 0-2 WAC), 6-0 to extend their winning streak to two games Friday.
“In conference, you have to make sure that at home, you do your job.” head coach Simon Tobin said.
The Spartans’ junior midfielder Danny Sanchez and junior forward Rodolfo Castro scored two goals in the game.
“Our aim was to control the first 20 minutes,” Tobin said. “[Roos] had a long travel. It’s hard. When you are on the road, if a team comes at you the first 20 minutes, it is not what you want to see.”
SJSU clearly displayed the pressure as Castro scored two goals under 15 minutes.
“We want it this year. We lost two conference finals. No doubt we just want a ring,” Sanchez said.
The Spartans scored all six goals in the first half giving them sole possession at the top of the Western Athletic Conference standings.
“What happened in training ground we can relate it to the game,” said junior midfielder Nicolas Brenes. “That is why we scored so many goals today because everyone was on the same page.”
Everyone was on the same page, including Tobin, and that allowed him to execute his game-plan at halftime.
“The WAC week is Friday to Sunday, and every one of the 11 starters was able to come out and rest,” Tobin explained.
Rest is crucial for the next couple of weeks for SJSU.
After their game Sunday at home against Houston Baptist (2-5, 0-1 WAC), they play the next three games on the road, adding up to 1,636 miles of travel.
