Women’s soccer shut out versus Arizona at home

By Sofia Wright — Staff Writer

In a hard-fought defensive battle, the San Jose State women’s soccer team fell to the University of Arizona, 1-0.

The Spartans (2-3-2) allowed a 29-minute goal to the Wildcats (5-1-0), which turned out to be the only netted ball of the game.

SJSU welcomed the Pac-12 foe to the Spartan Soccer Complex, but would not be able to pull out the home win.

With three corner kicks and four shots on goal, SJSU had put on great offensive pressure, but the Spartans conceded the only goal of the game in the 30th minute.

By the end of the game, the Wildcats outshot the Spartans 10-7, and 5-2 for shots on goal.

In the 84th minute, the Spartans had a chance to tie the game with a corner kick followed by Jamilecxth Becerra’s header, but the ball would not go in the back of the net for the Spartans.

SJSU had several opportunities to score, but were shut out; the last time they were shut out was on September 1 against No. 3 Stanford, where they lost 7-0.

This was a bounce back win for the Wildcats as they came off a loss against the Santa Clara University Broncos.

The Spartans don’t play for another five days and look to regroup in that time.

SJSU will play the University of Portland next. Last year, the Spartans had a heartbreaker against the Pilots and lost 0-1 in Portland.

The Friday match against the Pilots is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
