Women’s soccer routed 7-0 by Stanford

San Jose State women’s soccer had a forgettable night as Stanford clobbered the Spartans 7-0 in a unusual offensive frenzy.

This was the first meeting between the two teams since the Spartans lost in the opening round of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.

The Cardinal kicked off the season with two huge wins against No. 6 Penn State and No. 11 West Virginia.

Stanford was aggressive from the start, playing like a top-five team should. Within the first 12 minutes, it had three shots and one goal.

SJSU averages six shots per game, but the Stanford defense made it impossible for them to score.

The Spartans were only able to manage one shot on goal while The Cardinal had 14.

Coming into the game, SJSU had kept all its opponents off the scoreboard. Despite the seven goals scored, sophomore goalkeeper Ariana Romero recorded seven saves in the net.

Senior forward Jennifer Orozco had a scoring opportunity in the 15th minute for the Spartans, however the shot was blocked by freshman goalkeeper Katie Meyer.

Forward Catarina Macario scored two goals with two assists for Stanford and forward Carly Malatskey also added two more goals off the bench.

The Cardinal did not let up one bit, putting an exclamation point on the victory with the seventh goal in the 85th minute.

The Spartans will be back in action at home this Friday against Utah Valley to celebrate head coach Lauren Hanson’s 50th career win.
