It was a rough weekend for San Jose State beach volleyball (11-12) in its last tournament of the season as it finished in fourth place.
The Spartans did not manage to get a set win until the last match of the weekend in Hawaii.
Coming off a record-high of 11 season wins, the team was faced with higher caliber competition and got swept in all three matches.
The Spartans faced University of Washington (7-10) first.
The team was unable to get a single match win and lost 5-0. This marked the end of the Huskies six-match losing streak.
SJSU had a little break before its second matchup against host No. 6 University of Hawaii. None of the five pairs made it to a third set and the team fell 5-0.
The best scoring sets were the Spartans No. 2 pair of seniors Luiza Andrade and Giulia Gavio and No. 5 pair juniors Thaliana Grajeda and Kaitlynn Zdroik. Both pairs were still four points behind a victory.
The final match of the day followed immediately after and was against No. 14 Loyola Marymount.
The Spartans did put up more of a fight as two pairs got to three sets, but the team was still swept 5-0.
No. 1 position pair junior Caitlin Bettenay and freshman Tabea Schwarz won their first set 21-17, but dropped the next two 21-5 and 15-11.
Andrade and Gavio took a victory their first set as well, but it was a bit of a struggle to come out with a win as they dropped the following sets 21-17 and 15-7.
Sunday brought two more back-to-back matches for the Spartans and they went into three sets for two matches against Hawaii.
Even though it was a bigger fight than Day 1, SJSU still got swept 5-0.
The only Spartan pair to get a win was sophomore Ryann Thomison and freshman Sarah Smevog against Washington. They defeated Cat McCoy and Avie Niece 21-13, 19-21, 16-14.
Although the Spartans did not have a successful weekend, this was the best season they have ever had.
