Baseball seeks to break non-conference woes against Pilots

San Jose State baseball (17-15, 11-4 MW) is back in action Monday in a non-conference matchup against the University of Portland (19-14).

SJSU is coming off a three-game sweep against the University of New Mexico, while UP is on a three-game losing streak.

Kellen Strahm and the rest of the squad will look to break through the offensive slump against non-conference teams. The junior outfielder leads the team with .407 batting average.

For the Pilots, Trayce Tammaro tops with a .288 BA. The freshman infielder is also very patient at the plate as he has drawn a team-high 21 walks.

Senior infielders Matt Kelly and Daniel Lopez, and sophomore catcher Hunter Montgomery all tie for the team-high in home runs with five.

Since this will be the fourth-straight game for the Spartans, head coach Brad Sanfilippo may go the bullpen route.

If this is the case, sophomore pitcher Connor Konishi and freshman Ben Polack are possible candidates for the mound and will have to hit their spots against the UP offense.

As for the Pilots, they may also take on the bullpen strategy as this will also be their fourth-straight game.

The Spartans welcome the Pilots at Excite Ballpark at 2 p.m.
