The San Jose State women’s water polo team (7-9) dropped its third straight game in a non-conference matchup to Harvard 10-7 in Saratoga Thursday.
The Spartans trailed 4-0 at the end of the first period until sophomore Isabella Schmidt made the first goal during second.
The second goal of the first half was made by sophomore Lili Urvari during a power play. She was the only Spartan to have multiple goals in the match against Harvard (15-3).
During the third, Urvari scored her second of the , followed by a goal from senior captain Sierra Painter.
In the fourth period, freshman Olga Descalzi Portell was granted two five-meter penalty shots and converted 1-of-2.
Freshman Matilda Moore made the sixth goal for the Spartans during the fourth period, while the the last goal was made by sophomore Tyanna Supreme.
Despite the five goals made in the second half, SJSU could not close the gap by less than three goals.
The Spartans had eight power plays but could not get their offense together and went 1-for-8, while Harvard went 7-for-10.
“6-on-5 is not our strong point,” Urvari said. “We were not patient enough and have to work on it.”
Freshman goalie Hannah Henry had eight saves for the Spartans.
“More than half of their goals (Harvard) were made during power plays,” Henry said. “We couldn’t stop them defensively. It’s a struggle we’ve had all season.”
SJSU’s next match will be against UC Berkeley Saturday at 12 p.m. inside the West Valley College Aquatic Center.
