Baseball limited to one hit against Sacramento State

San Jose State baseball (12-8, 6-3 MW) jumped out to an early lead but could not hold off Sacramento State (13-7) in a 7-2 midweek contest.

The Spartans scored two runs in the first inning and that was the end of the offense for the night.

After senior infielder Aaron Pleschner walked and junior outfielder Kellen Strahm doubled, the Hornets issued a couple of walks and a wild pitch that the Spartans took advantage on.

SSU answered back in a big way as freshman catcher Martin Vincelli-Simard crushed a three-run homer to straight away center field in the bottom of the third.

It never looked back and went on to score seven unanswered runs and finished with eleven hits.

“We didn’t seem like we were very aggressive,” said head coach Brad Sanfilippo. “ We need to find a way on a Tuesday night to come out with some energy, and we just didn’t tonight.”

The Spartans only hit came from the Strahm double in the first inning. Other than that, the offense was shut down by a great Hornet pitching performance.

Sophomore Connor Konishi started on the hill for the Spartans and was relieved in the fifth after giving up three runs. Four more pitchers came into the game to try and stop the bleeding.

“Today was just a minor setback,” said sophomore pitcher Nicholas Morales. “We are just looking forward to this weekend against Fresno State.”

The Spartans head to Fresno this weekend for three games against Fresno State. Game 1 is set for Friday night at 6:05 p.m.
