San Jose State softball (18-9) secured its eighth-straight win with a complete sweep of Iona College on Sunday. The victory comes behind a walk off sac fly from junior infielder Cassidy Clark in the 8th inning.
It was a relatively ugly game for both teams as far as offensive performances go.
There were eight total hits in the game, and runs were a difficult thing to come by.
Even when runners were being put into scoring position by either team, the execution was simply not there for most of the game. SJSU left six runners on base and Iona left seven, which was a deciding factor in this one.
Pitchers from both sides picked up clutch strikeouts and forced ground balls to get out of jams.
Freshman pitcher Chrys Hildebrand started for the Spartans and had a solid performance. She threw for 5.1 innings, allowing only 5 hits and striking out 4 batters.
It was sophomore pitcher Caroline Bowman that closed it out for SJSU. Bowman came in and threw for 2.2 hitless innings.
Although the offense was not as effective as it has been of late, the Spartans found a way to win.
“I think it was about coming together,” said sophomore infielder Rayohna Sagapolu. “We pulled through… our main hitters were up doing what they were supposed to.”
The Spartans will aim for their ninth straight win on Tuesday at 12 p.m. when they take on Manhattan College at Spartan Stadium.
